The SPA

Saratoga. The longest, most demanding, and most rewarding meet in America begins July 3 and runs through September 7. For horseplayers, this is the championship season. Every serious player in the country will have their eyes fixed on the Spa.

Coming off an emotional weekend at Aqueduct, the energy is palpable. We've seen a surge of interest in our Saratoga packages—from all-inclusive memberships to savings plans and credits. That tells me one thing: players understand this isn't just another meet. This is Saratoga.

Our Workout Report will once again feature the host track, but that's only part of the story. The real story has always been the shippers.

We'll be covering works from Kentucky, California, and Florida, because that's where many of Saratoga's live runners are coming from. And here's something nobody else offers: our Kentucky workout videos are exclusive to RacingwithBruno. No other workout report embeds Kentucky workout videos. Mark my words, shippers are always a major factor at Saratoga. New York horses alone don't make this meet what it is. It's the invaders—the fresh faces from Churchill, Keeneland, Santa Anita, Del Mar, Gulfstream, and beyond—that often light up the tote board and create the prices we're all chasing.

For years, players have convinced themselves—maybe even brainwashed themselves—that a horse has to be at Saratoga, training over the surface, to be successful. Sounds logical. The problem is, the numbers don't support it.

Barry Meadow, in The Skeptical Handicapper, studied more than 10,000 races and found there is no measurable advantage to having a work over the track and no advantage to being stabled at the host track. Facts don't always line up with popular opinion. Horseplayers can believe whatever they choose, but keeping an open mind has always been one of the biggest keys to cashing tickets.

If you're the type of handicapper who automatically tosses every shipper because "they haven't worked over the track," your bankroll could be in for a long summer.

Finding live shippers has always been one of the cornerstones of our handicapping.

Players today have an endless supply of information—Sheets, Beyer Figures, speed figures of every variety, pace numbers, algorithms, and enough handicapping gadgets to fill a warehouse. There's value in many of them, but I still believe in identifying winning trends. I believe in understanding patterns. Most of all, I believe in connections.

In real estate, they say it's location, location, location.

At Saratoga, it's connections, connections, connections.

The trainers who point for this meet. The jockeys who get live calls. The ownership groups willing to take their shots. Understanding those relationships has paid dividends for decades.

Another ingredient many players lack is patience.

I believe with every fiber of my being that if you're patient, the big score will come. I've lived it for the last decade. Too many players empty the bankroll during opening weekend trying to force action. Saratoga doesn't reward impatience. The opening week is fertile ground for shippers to announce their arrival, and many do so at square prices before the betting public catches on.

Then there's the annual phenomenon I call B-Plus Mania.

The Turf Authority Workout Report gets forwarded from one person to another until half the grandstand has it. Somewhere along the line, the purpose of pari-mutuel wagering gets forgotten. A horse carrying one of their coveted B+ grades gets hammered at the windows. First-time starters with glowing reports become underlays before they ever step onto the track.

From my perspective, that's a wonderful thing.

When everybody is looking at the same information, opportunities are created elsewhere.

Our report isn't passed around. It isn't given away. It remains exclusive to our subscribers. There will be days when our opinion is completely different from the popular workout report. Those are the days we find value. Those are the days we get paid. That's been our formula for well over a decade.

Saratoga has no shortage of tipsters, clockers, and self-proclaimed experts. Every morning, golf carts shuttle back and forth between the Oklahoma Training Track and the main track loaded with clockers comparing notes. Most of them operate within the same echo chamber, hearing the same conversations and reaching the same conclusions.

I've never subscribed to that philosophy.

I've always marched to the beat of my own drum.

At Saratoga, I'm my own drummer boy.

Success at this meet isn't about following the crowd. It's about finding information the crowd doesn't have. It's about trusting independent observations, recognizing live shippers before everyone else does, understanding the right connections, and having the discipline to wait for the right opportunity.

Get the right information.

Get information that isn't in the hands of the masses.

That's how you survive Saratoga.

More importantly...

That's how you beat it.
