Ah… yesterday. A day worth savoring.
We took our swings—long shots, bold prices, conviction plays—and two four-star opinions rewarded us handsomely, double digits to win. No, we didn’t have the Pegasus winner. And no, I wouldn’t change a single thing about how we approached it. Not one decision. That, my friends, is the truth of the matter.
You see, when you make a decision, you make it with confidence. You make it based on what you believe to be true in that moment. I don’t believe in second-guessing myself. Never have. That kind of mental clutter has no place in my world. To be a good handicapper—a real one—you must possess the rare ability to handle winning decisions and losing ones with equal composure.
The moment they crossed the wire in the Pegasus, I was already living in Sunday. Forward motion. Always. What makes a good handicapper isn’t what you could’ve done or should’ve done. That kind of nonsense doesn’t reside here—unless, of course, someone has a working time machine tucked away… or perhaps a Sports Almanac à la Marty McFly.Great Scott, wouldn’t that be something? Hoverboard, foreknowledge, Super Bowl winners in September. But we don’t have that luxury. We never will.
And that’s perfectly fine.
Because to me, the journey matters just as much as the result.
Our Zoom attendees reached out afterward—two hours talking racing, ideas, philosophies, opinions. They enjoyed it. That matters. You matter. The client, the player, the racing aficionado—the lifeblood of this game—you matter to me. Always have.
I’ve been hammering one point home these last few weeks, and I’ll keep hammering it until it sinks in: use your own eyes. Learn to handicap visually, not numerically. Anyone can read a number. Very few can look at a horse and tell you anything meaningful. But if you can truly see it… then you can believe it.
As Ted Lasso so wisely says: Believe.
