Beat to Quarters

Updated: Nov 7

Master and Commander is one of my favorite movies of all time, the final scene (see below) is one of my favorites featuring the music of Luigi Boccherini, an Italian composer in the late 1700s.

The feature music in the duet below, is called Night Music of the Streets in Real Madrid.

It is my favorite music to have in the background when handicapping or handling, identifying, and posting work videos.

It puts me in the correct frame of mind.

I stumbled onto Boccherini watching Master and Commander on the Far Side of the World.

A great cast, fabulous cinematography, great story line and overall fun movie, makes you want to say "and William...Beat to Quarters"

Master and Commander is like handicappers for movie goers, they didn't appreciate it as much as they should as they are always looking for the next best thing. Great movie for the family and a bit of history based on Jack Aubrey memoirs

Handicappers want a winner, then the EXA, or TRI, and of course a single for their pick 4s.

I have to say, how much I apppreciate all of you, you made my BC weekend with all the notes and emails about how well you did. Y'all just followed us without hesitation.

I am genuinely happy when we do well, for you. It's like the boss being happy with your work. You are the boss and there is nothing like a happy boss.

I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself, my decisions affect my crew (my staff) and they know when I ask to 'beat to quarters' I have a damn good reason why.

This past weekend was not as easy as people might think, we had some issues to deal with, vehicles breaking down, but we as Racingwithbruno handled it. We didn't lose a drum beat to quarters.

Handicappers can be soft at times, "I just never do well at Del Mar'', said one handicapper, as he was preparing himself to lose, again, because he never does well at Del Mar.

Telling yourself you never do well doing something just sets you up for failure.I had a one, very famous trainer, tell me at Saratoga, "I never had any luck with Tapits''.

Yet, this trainer receives the best stock in North America, and his owners and bloodstock agents keep sending him the Tapits. He either has to put his foot down and say 'No more Tapits' or he learns how to handle them, one or the other.

Handicappers, 'I don't play maidens', are like little brats, what do they think fills races for winners, maidens who broke their maiden, its like ordering a cheese burger and no cheese. What the actual 'f%#K' ?

Grow a set and learn, surround yourself with the best information and learn.

"All I need is my past performances, every thing that I need is there."

Yawn, I have heard the argument before, and true the past performances have all the winners, but you got to go find them.

"Bullet works are for me, they tell me who's working good'', and Elmer Fudd will never beat or catch Bugs Bunny either. Why? Bugs is smart, quick on his feet, and clever, Fudd is a neanderthal.

That line 'bullet works are for me', first of all, tell that to the clockers, who love to manipulate the bullet works and show you who they want for you, 'and they tell who's working good', hey genius, that's horrible English, It's working well.

So, some horseplayers equate the bullet works to a horse working 'good'.

They are about as cool as a flightless bird. Seriously?

I have actually beat to quarters for people that tell me they know works, as they read them off past performance to me, with their explanation.

One handicapper told me 'Pletcher only works halves''. I responded he goes past the wire 5f and 6f, he does more than shown on paper. He argued with me telling me I didn't know what I was talking about. This guy was a 'Mammaluke' when those words came out of his mouth.

That's who you are beating to quarters for. players that want to tell you how much they know but in reality are using some primitive style of handicapping that was in play before the ice age.

You don't go into battle without weapons, if you perennially lose at a particular track [ fill in the blank], then what you are doing at that track doesn't work, duh! Figure that $hit out !!

You figure out what works. I have many different hats for each and every track, I know Del Mar, Saratoga, Churchill Downs, Gulfstream (Non-Tapeta), Keeneland, Fair Grounds, I want to learn more about Oaklawn.

Thus, I work on it, I simply don't open up the past performances and I am an expert, I first, beat to quarters.
